INTERPAT sponsors a Forum for the exchange of best practices in Patent Office management and patent examination, Rio de Janeiro, 3-4 July 2017

INTERPAT has sponsored a forum of patent office examiners and managers from the Latin America region and Europe.  The Forum was titled “Responding to the challenge of evolving biopharmaceutical innovation: Forum for the exchange of best practices in Patent Office management and patent examination” and was held at  the Windsor Excelsior hotel in Rio de Janeiro on 3 – 4 July 2017.

The Forum included presentations and round-table discussions INTERPAT representatives, R&D experts from USA and Brazil, managers and patent examiners from the Intellectual Property Offices of Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, United Kingdom and Spain, and a representative of the USA IP Attache’s office in Rio de Janeiro. The event was also observed by approximately 30 additional examiners from INPI Brazil.

After opening remarks by President Pimentel of INPI Brazil, the session began with presentations from the R&D experts about R&D in Brazil and the rapid evolution of new technologies in biopharmaceutical research, and from the INTERPAT representatives on the critical role of patent protection. Patent office participants next addressed best practices among the various patent offices with regard to examination of biopharmaceutical patent applications and the issues facing patent offices in responding to the increasing volume of patent applications and the need to keep up with technological developments.  Participants also shared practices for addressing patent backlogs, processes for hiring new examiners, and work sharing.  Discussions were wide ranging and open throughout the Forum.
